Extramel® is a patented freeze-dried melon juice concentrate made from a proprietary variety of cantaloupe melon (Cucumis melo L.; also sometimes called muskmelon) grown in Southern France. The story of this melon concentrate begins in 1989, when some French melon producers noticed that a new variety of cantaloupe had an impressively long shelf life, lasting up to weeks longer than regular melons. Research eventually uncovered why: this variety of melon had an exceptionally high content of a powerful antioxidant called superoxide dismutase (SOD)—in plants SOD is essential for stress tolerance and responding to environmental adversity. From this discovery, Extramel® was born. In order to produce a melon concentrate with high enough levels of SOD, and to also concentrate additional bioactive molecules from melon, including other antioxidant enzymes (e.g., catalase, glutathione peroxidase), 100 to 200 kg of fresh melon fruits are used to produce 1 kg of Extramel®. The dried melon juice concentrate is microencapsulated in a palm oil coating to preserve its activity from being broken down during digestion. SOD is important because it is part of our antioxidant defenses, and, similar to plants, is involved in helping us to respond to and tolerate stress. SOD has a key role in cellular and mitochondrial defenses against oxidative stress.*
Extramel® is a melon juice concentrate containing ≥14,000 IU/g of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (140 IU per 10 mg serving) from the 3 different SOD isoforms found in plants: Fe-SOD, Cu,Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD.
Extramel® is made from a proprietary variety of melons grown in Southern France. It is produced by Bionov (a Robertet company), the world’s largest producer of natural SOD. Only Bionov can use the seeds and produce this melon variety.
Extramel® is a registered trademark of Bionov.
Extramel® is a non-GMO, gluten-free, and vegan ingredient. It is Halal and Kosher certified.
Extramel® has been used in human studies at doses ranging from 10-40 mg. In studies that have focused on stress relief and cognitive performance, a dose of 10 mg, supplying 140 IU of SOD, has been used [1–3]. We chose our recommended dose to match the 10 mg dose used in these clinical studies where Extramel® has supported stress resistance and mental and physical stamina. This 10 mg dose is the dose recommended from its producer, Bionov.*
