When we formulated the Qualia Nootropic Energy we assumed regular Qualia Mind users would want to occasionally have a Qualia Nootropic Energy. So we designed them to be able to be used together on the days when you want an extra boost. However, when it comes to daily use we think of these products as being more in the either/or category. In other words, for daily use we’d generally recommend either Qualia Nootropic Energy or Qualia Mind, but not both be used.
Part of the reason we think of them in this way is that each of these products was formulated to stand on its own as a nootropic. Another part of the reason is that each contains caffeine. Taking a full dose of Qualia Mind with Qualia Nootropic Energy Shot would deliver 190 mg of caffeine, which is within the 50-200 mg range where caffeine performs.
And the last part of the reason is that Qualia Nootropic Energy is formulated to provide some of the same cognitive support as what’s found in Qualia Mind (e.g., Celastrus paniculatus seed extract, L-theanine, alpha-GPC, n-acetyl-l-tyrosine, niacinamide).*

Qualia is not a scam. We have a non-proprietary formulation - we publish exactly what’s in our product, with the exact amounts. We publish links to the research that support their safety and efficacy, which includes Phase II & III university and clinical trials, strong quantified self research data, and over 40+ years international research on nootropic stack formulation. We specifically designed our product with a set of ethical guidelines, so that we would avoid things like dependence or down regulation. Nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide are newer (and very expensive) dietary ingredients used to boost NAD+. Boosting NAD+ is not unique to these newer ingredients. It’s the defining characteristic that makes a compound a vitamin B3. The niacin equivalents—niacin (nicotinic acid; NA) and niacinamide (NAM)—boost NAD+. L-tryptophan is also a precursor for NAD+. We included both NA and NAM, as well as L-tryptophan, because these ingredients can be used to make NAD+ and this approach supports three different ways of making it. Redundancy is a core value within complex systems science and something we look for when formulating our products.
From our research we also are not convinced that nicotinamide riboside (NR) or nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) offer good value or actually deliver on their intended goals. Studies in the 1990’s found that NAD+ and other molecules in our food are broken down into niacinamide before being absorbed. NAD+ in food, as an example, was first broken down into NMN. The NMN was then further broken down into NR. And the NR was slowly turned into NAM during digestion. A small amount of this NAM was turned into NA by gut microbiota. So it was NAM (and to a much lesser extent NA) that was absorbed. Until information exists showing that the NR and NMN molecules can make it past digestion and the liver intact, we think these are very expensive ways to do something the other niacins do.
One of the interesting things found in studies is that placebos can have positive effects … and unwanted effects. The common side-effects seen from placebos match what are found in studies of dietary supplements and what we saw in our tolerability testing. These are minor complaints like headache, digestive disturbances, nausea, irritability, and fatigue. Most people don’t notice any of these unwanted responses. In the smaller subset of people who do, as a general rule of thumb, these types of complaints fade over time for most of them. They can also sometimes go away if you drink more water when you take the product, take it with a bigger meal, or decrease the dose you are taking.

In general, we recommend taking the full dose. The full dose provides the studied amounts of many of the ingredients (this is an important part of being able to make accurate structure/function claims) and is the dose we designed the formulation to deliver and have studied in our testing.
Feel free to adjust the dose as needed, whether this is over time or because of sensitivity to dietary supplements, in general, or to this formulation. Because of biochemical individuality and many other factors, we don’t all respond the same way to the same ingredients or doses. We don’t all have the same objectives or goals in mind. So, it’s perfectly fine to experiment with taking a lower dose that works best for you and your chemistry.
For some, it may be a good idea to begin slowly as you get started with this product. A good strategy, when starting anything new, is to start slow and gradually working your way up. This takes advantage of the body’s adaptive capacities and minimizes chances of poor response. When we designed Qualia Life, we did so understanding people would take it with one of the other Qualia nootropic products. Because of this, we made sure that the products, when combined, wouldn’t be giving too much of any individual nutrient. We are not a “more is better” company when it comes to the formulation of our products. It was very important to us to make sure the amounts of every ingredient would stay within a safe range when this product was taken with Qualia.
A subset of persons taking Qualia Mind in our testing of Qualia Life mentioned that the two together was a lot of capsules to take for them. For other people this wasn’t an issue. This is one of the reasons we are also producing Qualia Life in sachets.
While we’ve found that people often respond to Qualia Mind better when it’s taken without food, there’s a lot more flexibility on when you take Qualia Life. The important thing is finding a routine that that works best for you.

There are many dietary supplements available which claim to help people sleep. They typically use herbs intended to produce sleepiness, high doses of melatonin, or both. Unfortunately, these approaches don’t comprehensively address everything needed to produce high quality sleep. Some of the reasons that we have difficulty with relaxing at night and getting quality sleep have to do with brain energy production, sleep homeostasis mechanisms, pineal gland melatonin production, the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, gut-brain axis performance, brain growth & regenerative factors, and stress. Qualia Night was designed to support all of these areas. It does this without relying on botanical sedatives or giving melatonin. Why did you use coconut sugar in Qualia Nootropic Energy?
Four grams of organic coconut sugar are used to provide the mild sweet taste to improve the overall flavor profile of Qualia Nootropic Energy. We opted to use a sweetener that contains calories (as opposed to a non-caloric sweetener) because scientific research indicates low-to-moderate doses of easily digested carbohydrates can boost performance, and synergize with caffeine.
A Qualia Nootropic Energy contains 16 calories from 4 grams of organic coconut sugar. It also contains several grams of ingredients and about 90mg of caffeine. This means it would be somewhat similar to having a cup of coffee with some added sweetener, which some individuals are comfortable drinking while intermittent fasting, and others are not. Recent information has suggested that mega doses of biotin (5,000-10,000 mcg or more) may interfere with some lab tests, so several national lab testing services recommend ceasing supplementation with mega doses of biotin starting two days prior to certain lab tests. Phyto means plant, so phytoestrogens are plant-based compounds that mimic some estrogen functions in the body. Many foods, especially legumes, nuts, seeds, and fruits contain phytoestrogens. Qualia Vision uses the award-winning ingredient Lutemax® 2020, which contains the three macular carotenoids—lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Beta carotene or mixed carotenes, because they compete for absorption, can hamper the bioavailability of the eye-healthy macular carotenoids in Qualia Vision.
We recommend Qualia Vision be taken with a meal, because it contains several different fat-soluble nutrients: fat-soluble compounds are more bioavailable when consumed with dietary fat. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin—all three are found in Lutemax® 2020—and AstaPure® astaxanthin is fat-soluble carotenoids.
Saffron stigma extract and Goji fruit juice extract also contain fat-soluble carotenoids. Ginger contains fat-soluble compounds that give its characteristic pungent flavor. These ingredients would be expected to be more bioavailable if consumed with or near the end of a meal or snack that contains some fat.
If it is much more convenient for you to take Qualia Vision without food, we don’t think the bioavailability advantage should outweigh the convenience and would encourage you to take it in the way that would be easiest for you to fit into your schedule.
Qualia Focus was designed to be taken near the start of your day. This is true for most things with caffeine, since caffeine later in the day or at night may interfere with sleep.

However, because the amount of caffeine contained in a 2-capsule dose would be in the range of what’s been used in studies even in persons with low body weights, we would not consider bodyweight to be particularly important for dosing Qualia Focus. Yes, for some Qualia products, and for others, on an everyday basis, it will depend on the person. We consider Qualia Focus to be a great complement to Qualia Immune, Qualia Life, Qualia Night, and Qualia Vision. Combining Qualia Focus with other Qualia products would be dependent on a person’s sensitivity to caffeine. Qualia Focus, Qualia Mind, Qualia Mind Essentials, and Qualia Nootropic Energy Shot all contain caffeine and caffeine is not a “more is better” nootropic ingredient. Taking a full dose of Qualia Focus with Qualia Nootropic Energy Shot would deliver 190 mg of caffeine, which is within the 50-200 mg range where caffeine performs exceptionally well as a nootropic. For people who are not sensitive to this amount of caffeine, there is no reason why Qualia Focus and Qualia Nootropic Energy Shot can’t be used together.

Most polyphenols—fisetin included—are relatively poorly absorbed through the gut barrier. But science has been showing more and more that they can also act locally inside the gut and may exert effects through the gut-brain axis as well. So bioavailability is only part of the potential efficacy equation. Because of this, our science team puts much more weight on scientific studies evaluating body & brain responses over bioavailability. And, big picture, despite evidence suggesting poor bioavailability there are a lot of studies suggesting beneficial support for the brain & body even from poorly absorbed polyphenols. Even with quercetin, most of the senolytic studies to date have been with standard quercetin. We opted for Quercefit® because it was what was used in a human senolytic study, is being investigated in other human senolytic studies, and has been used in human clinical studies in other health areas (so has demonstrated brain & body support benefits)—so Quercefit® has much science behind it in addition to the evidence for its bioavailability.*
The data on the bioavailability of fisetin is a main reason that the Mayo Clinic chose to use a high dose of fisetin in their senolytic studies, and why we are recommending the 1400 mg/day dose of fisetin (which for a person of average weight matches the Mayo dose). In published animal studies of fisetin, oral fisetin in this human-equivalent dose range has supported the management of senescence cells, which is the main outcome we care about (not bioavailability). We think the recommended dose included in Qualia Senolytic is sufficient taking into account the data on fisetin’s low bioavailability, but we would not be as confident that the doses we've seen in other supplements claiming a senescent cell benefit (often 100 mg and sometimes a bit more) would provide the intended support.*

Did you drink alcohol with Qualia or mix it with other drugs?
Because of the GABAergic effects of alcohol mixed with Qualia, a small percentage of people could experience feeling a little spacey or trippy. Some users may also experience heightened effects of alcohol, such as feeling inebriated quicker, when taking Qualia. For these reasons, we don’t recommend taking Qualia within 24 hours of alcohol consumption.
We don’t recommend taking the product within 24 hours of psychoactive drugs either. If you plan on doing that, we suggest talking to a doctor about it first.
Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimers are all very different conditions and those with these or any other neuro-degenerative conditions are contraindicated. To date, we have not done any clinical trials pairing Qualia with neurological conditions, and as such, have no data to share regarding its potential impact.

Increased Heart Rate
If you are particularly sensitive to having heart rate increase because you have a heart condition or tachycardia, Qualia might be contraindicated. Please refer to our medical disclaimer and consult with your doctor.
If it’s only mildly elevated, stop use for a day or two, and try again at a lower dose, if you like.
Flushing
Qualia can increase circulatory function. A very small number of people might experience heat or redness in the skin or a sense of flushing. If it’s uncomfortable, discontinue use for a day or two and start again at a lower dose. For most people who experience this it will stop within a couple days.
For some, Qualia can help them remember their dreams more vividly.
Vitamin B6 in phosphorylated form, (Vitamin B6 as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate [P-5-P]), has been commonly reported to increase the lucidity of dreams. Many of the other brain nutrients and nootropic compounds found in our formulations also have some data reporting their impact on dreams.

Minimal alcohol consumption, such as a glass of red wine in the evening, is generally well tolerated. Please note, however, that taking with heavy alcohol consumption is not recommended. And also note that exceptions do exist where any alcohol consumption can contribute to noticeable decrease in intended effect and benefit. This is a topic of empowered responsibility for you to explore.
A small percentage of people have reported muscle tightness or soreness, particularly in the neck, shoulders or jaw. Some of those people may also report some sense of pressure in the head. This is most likely the result of choline sensitivity. People have various tolerances for choline and various choline sensitivities. There are a number of ingredients in Qualia that are designed to elevate acetylcholine levels. While this has many benefits, if it is more than someone's sensitivity is currently capable of processing, it can result in muscle tightness or soreness.
If it is intense or concerning, we recommend immediately discontinuing use and contacting us for a refund.
If it is mild and you want to explore further, you can try getting off the product for a few days to normalize and starting again at a lower dose and see if it is gone. Some people who have reported soreness reported that it went away even at a full dose after about a week because their bodies adjusted. These symptoms can also dissipate or disappear entirely after they started exercising more and actually utilizing more of the chemistry. These are all things you are welcome to explore.
The number one reason people may not feel the effects is lack of or poor sleep. Qualia works along the same pathways in the brain that move your memories from short to long term storage when you are in deep sleep.
If those pathways are blocked or unavailable due to lack of or poor sleep, you will not feel Qualia working.
If that is the case, the best advice is to stop taking Qualia and work on your sleep. Take 3-5 days and get as much sleep as you can. Rest up and then try Qualia again and see if you notice the difference.

Typically these are people who also notice an increased level of anxiety from caffeine related sources. If it is a milder experience on par with what you would experience with a cup of coffee and its something you would want to explore further, you can look at lowering or adjusting the dose accordingly. You may also choose to use Qualia in conjunction with more exercise, meditation and other activities that help address anxiety. Some people who are experienced neurohackers and want to dial in their own chemistry have reported choosing to take additional nutritional supplements (i.e. phosphorus, 5htp, magnesium 3 & 8, GABA, or other calming herbs along with Qualia, or, before bed) which help attenuate those kinds of experiences.

Feeling tired or fatigued?
Feeling some fatigue when first starting is sometimes experienced by a small percentage of users. The brain uses glucose-energy faster than muscles do, so when someone is really up-regulating their cognitive utilization (as you are when taking Qualia), just like when someone starts working out a lot, they can feel tired and need more rest and repair time.
For many, this fatigue abates as their bodies adjust within a week or 2. If it does not, and you find that this current formulation isn't the right match for your chemistry, let us know and we'll be happy to issue a refund.
Get good sleep. Eat well. Move your body. If you’re fading early in your productive workday, you can try a small secondary booster dose on an empty stomach. Also, make sure you are being realistic about how much you should actually be able to accomplish in one day.
