Why do you recommend taking Qualia Life for 5 days followed by 2 days off?

Neurohacker Collective uses a model of science called complex systems science. One of the core principles is adaptation. Living organisms are experts at adapting to things. 

Exercise is an excellent example of this. When we start a new exercise program muscles, and other systems like the heart and lungs, adapt to it which allows us to perform better. To optimize our response to exercise, we need to perform it and also allow enough time to recover from it. Because of this, a good trainer or coach wouldn’t have a person do the same exercise every day (i.e., continuous exercise); they’d have them take days off (i.e., intermittent exercise). 

By doing something intermittently, instead of continuously, we typically get more benefits and we continue to get benefits over long periods of time. Intermittent fasting is another example. During the fast, the body gets rid of some dysfunctional parts of cells and mitochondria. After the fast, during refeeding, it builds new better ones. Both the fasting and refeeding play a role. Unless there’s something a person needs to do or take everyday we think it’s a good general strategy to take breaks from it.

Why don’t you use nicotinamide ribose or nicotinamide mononucleotide?

Nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide are newer (and very expensive) dietary ingredients used to boost NAD+. Boosting NAD+ is not unique to these newer ingredients. It’s the defining characteristic that makes a compound a vitamin B3. The niacin equivalents—niacin (nicotinic acid; NA) and niacinamide (NAM)—boost NAD+. L-tryptophan is also a precursor for NAD+. We included both NA and NAM, as well as L-tryptophan, because these ingredients can be used to make NAD+ and this approach supports three different ways of making it. Redundancy is a core value within complex systems science and something we look for when formulating our products.

From our research we also are not convinced that nicotinamide riboside (NR) or nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) offer good value or actually deliver on their intended goals. Studies in the 1990’s found that NAD+ and other molecules in our food are broken down into niacinamide before being absorbed. NAD+ in food, as an example, was first broken down into NMN. The NMN was then further broken down into NR. And the NR was slowly turned into NAM during digestion. A small amount of this NAM was turned into NA by gut microbiota. So it was NAM (and to a much lesser extent NA) that was absorbed. Until information exists showing that the NR and NMN molecules can make it past digestion and the liver intact, we think these are very expensive ways to do something the other niacins do.

What should I do if I notice a side-effect and think it might be because of this product?

One of the interesting things found in studies is that placebos can have positive effects … and unwanted effects. The common side-effects seen from placebos match what are found in studies of dietary supplements and what we saw in our tolerability testing. These are minor complaints like headache, digestive disturbances, nausea, irritability, and fatigue. Most people don’t notice any of these unwanted responses. In the smaller subset of people who do, as a general rule of thumb, these types of complaints fade over time for most of them. They can also sometimes go away if you drink more water when you take the product, take it with a bigger meal, or decrease the dose you are taking.

If one or more of these common symptoms seems particularly strong, or if you notice something other than one of the common side effects mentioned, please stop taking the product and let us know.

Do I need to take the full dose of Qualia Life?

In general, we recommend taking the full dose. The full dose provides the studied amounts of many of the ingredients (this is an important part of being able to make accurate structure/function claims) and is the dose we designed the formulation to deliver and have studied in our testing.

Feel free to adjust the dose as needed, whether this is over time or because of sensitivity to dietary supplements, in general, or to this formulation. Because of biochemical individuality and many other factors, we don’t all respond the same way to the same ingredients or doses. We don’t all have the same objectives or goals in mind. So, it’s perfectly fine to experiment with taking a lower dose that works best for you and your chemistry.

For some, it may be a good idea to begin slowly as you get started with this product. Starting by doing less is done by taking 1-2 capsules a day for the first few days (three days is a good rule of thumb). Then gradually add 1-2 more capsules every few days till you reach the full dose. This gradual approach can be especially important for people who are already taking a lot of other supplements, or tend to be more sensitive to dietary supplements or foods.

Where is the Eternus Drink Mix?

Qualia Life Capsule Instructions:

Qualia Life effects are dose-dependent, varying with body weight, general sensitivity and desired level of effect. 

The standard dose for most people is 8 capsules. Take Qualia Life first thing in the morning, with food. 

Everyone's chemistry is unique, of course, and some users find that increasing or decreasing the standard dosage is key to optimizing the effects for their individual needs. If the standard dosage does not match your needs, we encourage experimenting and adjusting your dosage in order to find your optimal intake. 

Qualia Life Drink Mix Instructions:

Qualia Life effects are dose-dependent, varying with body weight, general sensitivity and desired level of effect. 

The standard dose for most people is 1 full sachet. Take Qualia Life first thing in the morning, with food.

Cycling Your Use:

Qualia Life is designed to be taken 5 days on and 2 days off each week.  This maximizes the benefits while preventing desensitization. It does not matter if the “off-cycle” days are consecutive or apart, so long as they happen each week.

Qualia Life was designed to work for those getting adequate sleep, in generally good health, and practicing good self-care.

How should I get started with Qualia Life?

A good strategy, when starting anything new, is to start slow and gradually working your way up. This takes advantage of the body’s adaptive capacities and minimizes chances of poor response. Exercise is a great example of this. When starting a new exercise routine, the tendency is to want to do a lot right away. But this increases chances of having very sore muscles or getting injured. So, it’s better to start conservatively and slowly do more as your body gets accustomed to the new routine.

Can I take Qualia Life in addition to one of the Qualia products?

Yes you can take Qualia Life with Qualia Mind, Qualia Mind Essentials or Qualia Nootropic Energy. 

When we designed Qualia Life, we did so understanding people would take it with one of the other Qualia nootropic products. Because of this, we made sure that the products, when combined, wouldn’t be giving too much of any individual nutrient. We are not a “more is better” company when it comes to the formulation of our products. It was very important to us to make sure the amounts of every ingredient would stay within a safe range when this product was taken with Qualia.

A subset of persons taking Qualia Mind in our testing of Qualia Life mentioned that the two together was a lot of capsules to take for them. For other people this wasn’t an issue. This is one of the reasons we are also producing Qualia Life in sachets.

While we’ve found that people often respond to Qualia Mind better when it’s taken without food, there’s a lot more flexibility on when you take Qualia Life. The important thing is finding a routine that that works best for you.
